The department is authorized to promulgate rules and regulations establishing regulatory standards applicable to owners or operators of hazardous waste treatment, storage, or disposal facilitites as may be necessary to protect human health or the environment (Ala. Code, 22-30-16 [1975]). This series is composed of regulatory records created/maintained in the Hazardous Waste Branch, Land Division, for facilities, such as foundries, chemical plants, refineries, and manufacturing plants, that manage hazardous wastes generated onsite by treatment, storage, or disposal (TSD). Included are applications for permits, inspection reports, compliance and enforcement records, financial assurance documents addressing the facility's ability to cover costs of any environmental damage that might occur in the event of an accident and to meet the closure cost after the facility is closed, memoranda, and correspondence. Parts of these records were created by the Department of Public Health, 1978-1982, under the provisions of the Hazardous Wastes Management Act of 1978.
